Festival of Angels

I was so grateful to be able to participate in the 2013 Cape Fear Festival of Trees for Hospice, that I created this special painting for them.  This painting celebrates not only the wonderful trees at this year's festival, but also the "Angels" of Hospice and the many loved ones so close to our hearts.  The doves fly freely overhead as they watch over us and guide us.

My Poem for this one, "By Your Side," is part of my Songs of Comfort Series:

Butterfly Tree

Our tree for the 2013 Cape Fear Festival of Trees was called "Angels Wings" but everyone knows it as the Butterfly Tree.  Our goal was 1000 butterfly wings with butterflies representing the souls of loved ones.  We wrote special names for friends and family on some of the wings.

Butterfly Angel

This painting is of the angel that adorns the top of my Butterfly Tree.  My sister made the angel especially for me using a butterfly for her wings.

Heart of the Butterfly

This painting features the Lower Cape Fear Hospice logo tree which continues to grow in their Heritage Garden in Wilmington, NC.  There are 7 hidden hearts in the painting (not counting the hearts in the logo tree).  Hospice uses the monarch butterfly in their butterfly release ceremony to honor loved ones.

Jenny's Sleeping Beauty

Jenny picked the colors for Sleeping Beauty and the fairies that follow her.   Jenny says that Aurora is in purple because when the pink fairy and blue fairy keep changing the color of her dress, it ends up purple!

"Jenny, as her favorite princess, Aurora, dances on the streets of Wilmington as she leads off the Azalea Parade with the cast of characters from Sleeping Beauty."

Jenny's Cinderella

I was excited to see how the pumpkin coach came to life using the new bright orange paint Jenny picked out to give me for Christmas.  This latest painting is also for my Ballet Series fundraiser for the Wilmington Ballet Company.  http://balletseries.blogspot.com

"Dressed in her Carolina Blue ball gown that she wore for her sister's wedding, Jenny twirls her way to the awaiting pumpkin coach.  As Cinderella, she leaves her slipper behind on the steps of Bellamy Mansion while her handsome prince runs after her."

Jenny's Romeo & Juliet

Our family has seen many plays in Thalian Hall over the years and several with our daughter, Lana, performing in various school musicals.  The balcony offers the perfect scene for the latest painting in my Ballet Series for the Wilmington Ballet Company. http://balletseries.blogspot.com

"Jenny, as Juliet, longs to be with her Romeo as she sees him below her balcony on the stage at Thalian Hall.  Her family will watch from the front row as this historic community theater brings the classic tale to life."

Jenny's Nutcracker Ballet

Jenny's favorite Ballet is the Nutcracker.  Ever since she was little, Jenny has watched this ballet over and over again.  She has many DVD's of the Wilmington Ballet Company's performances each year.  I have painted Jenny wearing the Christmas dress given to her by her cousin.  She holds our nutcracker which we found one year in the Outer Banks.  The green couch on the right is from my grandmother's house.  The clock is a Wilmington landmark from downtown.  The tree is Wilmington's famous "World's Largest Living Christmas Tree."  Frank's sailboat is in the picture in the background.

"Dancing with her Nutcracker in front of the World's Largest Living Christmas Tree, Jenny's dreams turn magical as Clara performs her ballet."

Firebird at Airlie Gardens

This painting features a ballet dancer from one of Jenny's favorite bedtime stories about the Firebird.

For my Ballet Fundraiser Series:  http://balletseries.blogspot.com/

The magnificence of Airlie Gardens is only outshined by the brilliance of the Firebird as Jenny dances her way through the columns and statues. Her onlooking suitors have turned to stone and stand motionless in the gardens waiting to be released from the magical spell.

Midsummer Night's Dream at Greenfield Lake

Jenny poses for me in one of the ballet costumes our friend, Rhoda, gave her.  I change the color to pink to match the azaleas at Greenfield Lake and the flower "chair" the dancer will use onstage.  The colorful fairies in the background were created using the paint colors Jenny gave me for Christmas (using the money she made from Riverfest for selling her own artwork).

For my Ballet Fundraiser Series:  http://balletseries.blogspot.com/

Hiding among the cypress trees at Greenfield Lake, Jenny and the characters from A Midsummer Night's Dream create their own Fairyland in this ballet.
